有點晚到,但是感受南台灣人的關愛
Late but loved
台灣高雄四月六日
6 Apr, 2009 :: Kaohsiung, Taiwan
While many of the crew had already gone to bed, others remained outside, working and watching to see Kaohsiung emerge from the dark. Azure lights guided Doulos into port at midnight after delays on the rough voyage from Manila. 'Taiwan will change your heart!' played on the quayside as the ship came alongside in this well developed city, while local volunteer translators waved enthusiastically. “The volunteers had been waiting for us all night,” said an impressed Lisa Chestnut, (USA), bundled up against the cool breeze. After docking, deck hands secured the mooring lines and almost immediately began loading pallets of Chinese books from the quayside onto the ship for the Doulos book fair.

This Official Opening in Kaohsiung was the most energetic the Doulos crew has seen for a long time. Harbour Master Director General Shieh Ming Hui, Kaohsiung County Mayor Yong Cho-Sin, and Kaohsiung City Government Representative Su Li-Jone watched two drummers pound a lively tempo on two big drums. An exercise group in teal and pink and an aboriginal dance group in colourful head dresses entertained the crowd in U Len Mato Port. “This is a highlight after the rough voyage from Manila,” said Captain Arne Johansen (Faroe Islands). Flower garlands of white, purple and pink were exchanged between five Kaohsiung representatives and the Doulos crew.

“Do you have false teeth?” asked one Taiwanese resident to another at the Doulos Let’s Speak English programme in Kaohsiung. The people of Taiwan or 'terraced bay' began the evening making nautical hats and showing them off in the Doulos parade of hats. “The Main Lounge was crowded!” reflected Joanne Teo (Singapore) as high school students, kids, and adults practiced speaking English in a rare and memorable environment. 'Doulos - an International Ship' was the first programme in a succession of three which will be held each Tuesday night from 7:30-9:90pm. Tickets are still being sold for the next two Let’s Speak English classes where 150 locals will get the chance to speak about 'Travelling' and 'Food' with Doulos crewmembers.

A group of locals eagerly huddled their heads together to listen to Katherine McDougall (Australia) explain about an odd looking creature known as the kangaroo - an animal they had never seen or heard of. "I showed them how a kangaroo jumps and described a kangaroo pouch!" said Katherine. Extra chairs and tables had to be pulled out as a large number of visitors gathered in the main lounge to make imaginary visits to foreign destinations. Smiles and laughter quickly spread across the room as participants engaged in cultural exchange through a variety of activities. After returning from a 'visit' to Germany, Kaohsiung resident Fu-Mei Chen exclaimed, "The programme was interesting and well organised. Doulos crewmembers are friendly and welcoming!"

Eyes widened as Mary Lou Kaiser (South Africa) said that she had tried giraffe, zebra, crocodile and different types of antelope meat while growing up in South Africa. Addressing an audience of over 1500 teenagers and aiming to provide a wider perspective on different cultures while encouraging students to realise how special and unique they are, Doulos crewmembers gave an hour long presentation and performance at Fong Shan High School. Utilising mimes, dramas, videos and vivid pictures, Mary Lou noted, “The youth seem stimulated and very responsive. Because we’re using a lot of visual aids, it keeps them involved!” There was no doubt that the vibrant energy that filled the auditorium motivated both students and visitors from Doulos alike.
