Two Doulos carpenters, Benjamin Schneider (Switzerland) and Joachim Meili (Switzerland) headed up a three day house-building project for a grandmother and eight grandchildren in the jungle near Kuching. With her son in jail and her daughter-in-law deceased, Grandmother Lepan had no means to support her grandchildren. They survived by gardening, but didn’t have proper lodging. With the help of a local contact, Mr. Laua, the Doulos crew were able to build this family a brick house. Three of the little Malay boys helped mix cement, carry bricks, and inspect the work of the crew. Benjamin said, “The best part for me was not the work itself, but knowing that we were meeting a real need in a real way.”

“Welcome to Sarawak!” shouted signs as big as billboards to welcome Doulos after a seven year absence in Kuching. Welcomed was exactly how the murals in Kuching’s Sim Kheng Hong Port made the Doulos visitors feel. The event was part of the Kuching And The Doulos Experience organised for 100 local high school students. Sponsored by Murobond paint company, the youngsters aged 13-19 painted murals in different languages for a competition. Questions like, “Is this it?, So what happens next?, and What’s it all about?” were pondered and expressed through brilliant shades of red, yellow, blue, and green. The winner of the 20 teams will be announced on Saturday, December 20th by Captain P.J. Thomas.

Kids in bright orange protective thermal wear raced by a liferaft filled with balloons during Open Ship on Doulos. Burgundy table cloths covered the Compass Café coffee tables where families sat listening to Rebecca Way (USA) play her guitar. Games provided entertainment for the mentally alert while the Snowman’s Table gave opportunities for people to create paper snowflakes with their hands. Cultural booths highlighted Swiss candles and maps, African drums and art, and Korean characters. A brother and sister aged seven and eight, showed delight as their mother, Chris explained, “My kids have never seen a book store like this before. They had lots of fun!”
