Doulos sailed through the cool morning air as the rugged, green islands of Fiji basked in the early morning light.
The crew’s spirits rose with the sun, as they were met by ship yard workers waving their arms and shouting
“Bula! Bula! Welcome to Fiji!” After a long day of work, the sun set and crew were ready to receive their special
guests to officially open the book fair.
Honorable Mayor Rohit Kumar attended the evening programme as the Guest of Honour.
He graciously welcomed the ship, saying, “I give my hearty and warm welcome to the captain and crew of MV Doulos
– our people will make use of this opportunity so dearly provided!”

While the focus of port visits is to benefit the local community,
there are also regular opportunities for the crew and staff to receive training and develop new skills.
In Lautoka, thirty-three crewmembers from many different departments took part in the Global Action Leadership
Training programme, a nine-day course to help participants develop their leadership potential.
At the start of the visit to Suva, the ship remained closed to the public for as a whole week was set aside
for the annual community time.
With the busy pace of like on board, it is important to have this special time for reflection,
teaching, rest and relaxation. By the time the port programme was due to start,
refreshed crew and staff were ready for action again.

Before the streets of the capital city of Suva started buzzing with pedestrians,
a group of homeless people sat patiently waiting in the early morning.
Meanwhile, a team from Doulos joined church members who faithfully serve breakfast to them every Saturday
and Sunday. The crewmembers joined in easily with the laid-back atmosphere.
Food and tea were handed out and conversations began. One homeless gentleman named Johnny
shook each team member’s hand, saying “Thank you for coming and doing God’s work!”
The team was amazed to hear that Johnny was 92! “You are only two years younger than our ship!”
one crewmember exclaimed. As the city began to come to life, the five individuals all had the opportunity
to share their lives and demonstrate God’s love.
