Where is God? what is Gospel?

Taiwan for Myanmar Cyclone Relief

Myanmar Cyclone Relief Update - 9 May 2008

The OM Team has done an initial assessment of the needs in several places in Yangon city, and the outskirts of the city, including churches and orphanages. The list will be released shortly. Also surveyed were the communities around the churches. Of particular concern is Dallah; the poor community across the river where OM has an on-going project.

There is an urgent need for basic necessities of water, rice, beans, salt, oil, sugar, candle, charcoal, fuel, water purifiers, instant noodles, mosquito nets, roofing materials, first aid kits, medicines. An initial distribution of the above had been done. In addition, sacks of rice have been given to the orphanages which had run out of food.

The OM team is in the process of developing relief partnership with seven national churches and an NGO. Beyond Yangon, the team plans to provide relief to the Irrawaddy division, Karen, and Mon states. Our team is ready to recruit and coordinate local and international volunteers.

Funds are needed and also wisdom how to bring those funds into the country. Visas continue to be a challenge.

Mercy Teams International is grateful to God that MTI’s Yangon Coordinator, Than Than has survived the cyclone. Apart from some damage to her house, she is well.

We also give thanks to have heard from MTI's partner, Thai Vangh, coordinator of Hope Community Ministry. Although most of the houses in the village have been destroyed, Thai and local pastors have managed to distribute rice rations to about 40 survivors in the area.

We are yet to establish the well-being of Myint Myint Hling and her son, James, coordinating MTI’s pre-school ministry.

Dave Greenfield, Director of MTI, is still awaiting visa approval to carry out an assessment of relief aid and workers needed in the outlaying villages where MTI has been working.

MTI plans to ship emergency medical supplies and personnel as soon as clearance is given and these will be coordinated by our Yangon leader, Than Than, who is also a Staff Nurse.
