While Doulos was in Wellington, seven crewmembers made a six-hour journey through breathtaking scenery
to the small town of Motueka on the South Island,
where they spent several days helping with local community projects.
Warmly dressed to keep out the cold, and with a van full of borrowed gardening tools,
the team joined Bob – a key member of the “Keep Motueka Beautiful” group.
At the age of 83, Bob is a vibrant character who steadfastly serves the community by turning boggy
swamps into beautiful parks. Using shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows, the team helped Bob in his efforts.
“You have done a great job out here!” he said. “You can say that you have all had a part in keeping
New Zealand beautiful!”

While Doulos was in Wellington, teams went to the different nursing homes to interact with the elderly residents.
They presented songs in different languages, representing the diversity of nationalities on board,
and introduced themselves individually to each person.
A drama illustrated how special each person is and that they are loved.
Then the crew members sat down with the elderly to listen to their, sometimes emotional, life stories.
It was a real pleasure for the elderly, since many seldom receive visitors.
Even though some could not express themselves very well anymore, the team’s presence was clearly a highlight.
“The joy in their eyes showed how much they appreciated people caring for them and listening to them,”
one crewmember reflected.
